An Intriguing Museum Visit, 1

A friend from the States came to visit so we went to the Carthage Museum, which sits on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean and Carthage, now a suburb of Tunis.

We saw the usual ruins (not as good as Uthina, in my opinion)
and the usual Roman statues.

Having a vested interest in fabric, I was rather taken by the carved draped clothing and the embroidery in marble.

Inevitably, however, my eye stopped at the mosaics.

Such remarkable designs and borders!
Now who wouldn't see a quilt design here?

What extraordinary mosaics!
Definitely great quilting inspiration! I love the way you can be so blasé about the "usual" Roman statues:-)We don't get many of those here!!

I visited Carthage many, many years ago. I remember how quiet it was (no tourists but us) and how moved I felt to be in a place so full of history.

I have taken so many pictures of tile floors and mosaics on my travels. I always think that it will be quilt inspiration, but rarely is. Your pictures are great!

Oh certainly a quilt, specially the pic 3 up of the squares in twos.I've enjoyed catching up here, loved the birthday cake, exquisite! That's quite a theme you've got going with 'he went to work everyday' & I've got to say I do like your sketching on cloth tho it is difficult to keep them as simple sketches sometimes ;)

Those mosaics definitely make me think of quilts! Since I began quilting, I seem to see quilting designs in almost everything!

What a picturesque place ... you would have had to DRAG me from all those photo ops! Visiting ruins has always been an obsession of mine. And look how those are highlighted by the beautiful red bushes near the wall - splendid.

Such fine mosaic work. Lovely muted colours, but I wonder if the colours have faded from bright colours over the years. Thank you for sharing these photos.

Yes, yes. The relationship between mosaic and quilts is so striking. A way of conceiving part/whole relationships that is so different from writing--yet not at all antithetical

I've been to Carthage in the past and I was surprised because it just seemed so 'sterile' in comparison to the sites we have in Libya. It made me realize that if Libya ever gets a good tourism industry off the ground the sites will definitely change. Thanks for posting.
